Sales Tax: Charging and Tracking Tax

What This Page Does

Store Settings → Sales Tax is where you set the tax you charge. It is one rate for your online shop and your Point of Sale register, and a report of everything you have collected for filing time.

Open Sales Tax →

Setting Your Rate

  1. Enter your Standard rate: your combined rate (state, county and city together) for your store address.
  2. Optional: a Reduced rate. Some states tax food lower than everything else.
  3. Tick My listed prices already include tax if a $5 item should cost $5 out the door. Leave it off to add tax at checkout, the usual way online.
  4. Press Save.

Which Products Are Taxed

Each product uses the rate it is set to in the product editor: Standard, Reduced or Zero (never taxed). New products start out not taxed, so open any product that needs tax and set it. The Sales Tax page shows how many products are on each rate, with a Review your products link.

How Online Tax Works

  • Charged on pickup, local delivery and orders shipped within your state.
  • Not charged on orders shipped to another state, or on shipping fees.
  • Shown to your customer as its own line at checkout and on their receipt.
  • Paid out to you with each order. It is yours to file and send to your state.
  • Never counted in your Cottage Food Revenue Tracker, because tax isn’t revenue.

Tax Collected

The same page has a Tax collected report: taxable and non-taxable sales, online versus in person, by rate and by month, for any period you pick. Download spreadsheet when it is time to file. This quarter’s total is on your dashboard home too.

Tip — Not sure you need to charge it at all? Plenty of states don’t tax most home-baked goods. Your state’s Department of Revenue can tell you for certain.
