Waiʻanae moku once known for the abundance of food produced from their rich vertisol soils. Now faces some of the highest rates of health inequalities related to food. With the lowest average household income many community members does not have the purchasing power to access healthy affordable food, therefore they either skip a meal or purchase cheap high calorie low nutrient foods. Leading to numerous health challenges that includes high rates of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases/conditions, and cancer. Mākeke Waiʻanae is a farmers market that perpetuates a social, economic and intellectual space for community members, and vendors to access an equitable and sustainable farmers market.
